WHAT IS A TIONÓL?
A “tionól” is a music workshop, which usually focuses on uilleann piping, though Irish fiddle and other instrumentation can be included in the weekend. The workshops consist of instrumental group lessons – usually centralized around exploring technique and understanding of traditional Irish music, while learning/and or analyzing tunes. It’s a good idea to show up one WITH an instrument, with questions to discuss with fellow tionól-goers and instructors, and with recording devices for personal use. Daily sessions and an evening concert featuring the instructors are always included. It’s a whole lotta fun!

HISTORY:
In 2002, the South East Tionól had its beginnings as a workshop weekend with one thing in mind: getting lessons for Florida pipers from a top-tier instructor. The first workshop took place at Maitland Middle School in Maitland, Florida, and was attended by pipers from all over the state, with Eamonn Dillon as the instructor. The following year, John Maze and Larre Reeves (both at the time from Gainesville, Florida) organized the first official Tionól in Florida, and it was named “The Florida Tionól”. Since then, we have (for the most part) been keeping an annual Tionól going in the South Eastern United States. It changed names along the way as well. It is now called “The South East Tionól” and is run by Gary White and Kathleen Dugan Cavanagh. It has moved from Gainesville to Atlanta, to Tybee Island and Oviedo, Florida. Currently, its home is located in Orlando, Florida and is centered around the Claddagh Cottage Irish Pub, an epicenter of traditional Irish Music in Orlando. The event takes place the first weekend in February and features the uilleann pipes and Irish fiddle.
